Overview

Since its introduction in the late ’90s, the MasterCraft XStar has left an immeasurable mark on wakeboarding, propelling the sport and its riders to unbelievable levels. For 2025, MasterCraft completely redesigned the XStar from the bottom up, but it’s now offered as a 23-footer, which we tested, and as a 25-footer. Performance, luxury, technology, fun and functionality have all been enhanced in major ways, taking the XStar to new heights.

Interior and Accessories

Take a look. This XStar not only looks different from any previous iterations, but from the rest of the MasterCraft lineup as well. Gone is the signature sheerline that dipped at the hip, just aft of the tower, and in its place is a look that is both sleeker and bolder. The tower too is all-new. Dubbed the Z100, it power-folds in a matter of seconds, and it’s designed to accentuate not only the exterior look of the XStar, but the interior as well, thanks to upholstered inlays. Speaking of that interior, throughout the boat, the stitching and SeaDek flooring feature a modern linear pattern that lends the XStar a vibe of its own. The seat cushions and upholstery are top-notch, providing ample comfort, while details such as built-in wireless chargers and sunglasses holders in the cubbies help elevate this boat. While previous iterations of the XStar were always known for on-water performance, this offering exudes luxury and refinement too.

For seating, the XStar has a new trick up its sleeve—or under its floor. Instead of the typical sliding rear bench, the XStar features what MasterCraft calls a “Murphy seat.” Lift the floor hatch, and a bench easily pulls up into the cockpit. Keep the backrests folded down, and they act as a tabletop for food and drinks. The best seats in the house though are at the transom, and they are easily accessible thanks to a new, cascading walk-through design. Two ultracomfy loungers sit on either side of the engine compartment and make for the perfect spot to sit back and relax.

Our test boat came with 26 total speakers: 10 cockpit speakers, four tower speakers, six transom speakers and six subs. The whole system—called MAAX for MasterCraft Aft Audio Experience—is impressive and can be individually controlled in seven separate zones, but the transom setup is unique unto itself. Simply put, audio for hanging out at the back of a boat doesn’t get better.

The other best seat in the house is definitely the captain’s. It offers plush cushioning and powered fore/aft and vertical movements for a customized combination of visibility and comfort. From here, you command new tech in the form of the dual displays—a 15-inch panoramic center display paired with a 12-inch touchscreen to the right. The screens feature an all-new interface that is equal parts sleek and simple. Quick menu navigation and adjustments happen with just a finger tap or two. MasterCraft went further, adding the MyDrive rotary encoder, located right next to the throttle. This allows quick adjustments on the fly to the most used systems such as surf wave or speed control, all without needing to touch a screen. Got a system or setting you’re regularly accessing? Add it to the “favorites” button for the ultimate shortcut. Captains will also appreciate the ability to customize the center display and choose between the multitude of built-in cameras on the XStar: bow, tower, port stern and starboard stern.

Ballast

When it comes to wakesurfing, the J shape that MasterCraft has long touted is more evident than ever behind the new XStar, meaning riders can get farther back and still have plenty of push. Much of this is also due to the XStar’s overall displacement, which comes in at 7,600 pounds of dry weight plus 3,850 pounds of ballast. If you’re wondering—and of course you are—that’s an identical total displacement to Nautique’s G23 Paragon. Thanks to SurfStar, the wave is easily adjusted to suit a variety of skill levels and preferences, and the display makes those adjustments even easier to navigate and understand. For wakeboarding, the wakes go from all-pro, when the ballast is full, to friendly and accommodating, which is great for beginners. Notably, the XStar delivers clean, consistent wakes, even at slower speeds (less than 20 mph), with little to no ballast, ensuring beginners a fun, approachable platform for learning to catch air.

If you’re shopping the all-new XStar against others in the market, the most likely comparison is Nautique’s G23 Paragon (seen advertised for $474,324 with a 630 hp PCM ZZ8 engine), which is also renowned for its luxury and wake/wave performance. Just a few inches shorter, it’s also rated for 16 passengers but carries 20 fewer gallons of fuel.

MasterCraft XStar 23 aft seating

The most surprising aspect of the XStar might actually be the driving performance. As wakesports boats have grown and dwarfed their water-ski predecessors over the years, handling characteristics haven’t kept up. Thanks to its 6.2-liter supercharged Ilmor motor, the XStar delivers serious giddyap, and handling to boot. Throw it into a hard turn at speed, and it tracks and pivots in ways that are reminiscent of those older ski boats. More than anything though, the ample power ensures that the XStar gets on plane quickly, no matter the load or activity of the day.

The XStar was originally given its moniker as an ode to all things extreme, and wakeboarding was the new, cool “extreme” sport at the time. Now the “X” might have to stand for “extra.” If you’re in the market for the ultimate in luxury, styling, performance and fun, put the XStar high on your list.

Overview

When it comes to premium watersports-specific boats—think top luxury, killer tech and jaw-dropping performance—there are plenty of choices. One not to be ignored is the Ultré 23ZX from Texas-based Tigé. Whether you’re running it, riding in it, shredding behind it, or looking at it from across the lake, this 23-footer hits with a slick combination of beauty and beast.

Interior and Accessories

Pronounced “ultra,” the Ultré ZX is just that in every facet. Its simplified badging, clean lines and custom details scream “means business.” Once on board, the luxury and innovative features are instantly noticeable. The premium vinyl and signature stitching, along with the complementary patterns of the soft-touch flooring, help set the Ultré ZX apart. Padding is supple and bolsters reside in all the right spots—your crew will appreciate the curved backs of the wraparound seating. The aft bench flips into the cockpit to become rear-facing, and the back can be lowered to act as a tabletop. But Tigé also provides a unique, hidden table that slides out from under the walk-through.

Tigé Ultré 23ZX helm

A special feature of the wraparound seating is what Tigé has dubbed its FastFlip Co-Captain’s Chair. Resembling seating found aboard sterndrive runabouts, it features a convertible backrest that can face either forward or aft. Both options proved comfortable, and a bolster adds support when facing forward. A touchscreen beside the seat allows the co-captain to control the Ultré’s audio, lighting and even a heater—one of the coolest features that sits at their feet, literally.

Tigé Ultré 23ZX cockpit

A built-in electric cooler adds both luxury and convenience to the Ultré ZX. The UltréChill keeps your beverages and snacks cold and fresh, and can continue running with the engine off. (The cooler shuts down if the battery levels drop to a certain point.) Positioned just right and upholstered, it serves as a footrest for a co-captain facing forward. Before decrying this cooler as taking away a common wakeboat storage spot, know that Tigé has integrated ample space beneath the seat.

Tigé Ultré 23ZX accents
Luxury appointments are found throughout. Garrett Cortese

With a very high gunwale, the Ultré 23ZX offers added comfort and security when cruising. This deep cockpit also helps maximize storage. The space beneath the wraparound seating rates as some of the deepest I’ve seen aboard a watersports boat—in fact, it was large enough for my 6-foot-1-inch, 190-pound self to crawl inside and close myself in. So, yes, the space is large enough to hide a body.

Speaking of bodies, several can lounge comfortably in the bow, which is a hybrid between traditional and pickle-fork styles. Tigé carried the Ultré 23ZX’s depth through the bow, making it one of the more secure-feeling I’ve seen. The space is customizable to become a playpen or have a padded walk-through, while the backrest at the front also flips down, revealing a padded step to aid in boarding over the bow. Storage abounds underneath, and a dedicated locker handles the anchor.

Tigé Ultré 23ZX transom seats
The dual-facing transom seats are extremely comfortable. Garrett Cortese

For the indecisive loungers on the boat—the Ultré 23ZX can accommodate up to 16—Tigé has integrated dual-facing transom seats. Above the engine compartment, you can flip up a backrest and face into the wraparound seating area. Or flip the opposite section up and face the water. Both proved very comfortable. The padded walk-through bisecting the transom lounge provides easy swim-platform access, where you can find two more comfy seats. The high gunwales make for a big step down to the platform, but Tigé offers an optional step that floats just above the swim platform. Push a button and the rear section of the power platform lowers into the water, making entry and exit much more comfortable. A giant surf locker underneath the transom seats offers room for multiple boards and other pieces of gear.

Tigé Ultré 23ZX wakeboarding
The Go System gets riders set up quickly. Garrett Cortese

Ballast

When it comes to riding, the Ultré 23ZX delivers, thanks in large part to its 7,400-pound dry weight, 4,000 pounds of internal ballast and the integration of the TAPS 3T system. The wakes and waves are clean, crisp and fun for all levels because riders can adjust them easily to suit a variety of skills and styles. Making those adjustments is as simple as a finger tap. The helm of the Ultré ZX is outfitted with one large touchscreen, which keeps the sightlines clean without losing any functionality. Tigé calls it the Go System. Simply tap the “Go” icon on the screen, select your discipline (wakeboard, surf, foil or ski) and your level, and the boat does the rest. The head-up display in the center of the screen features mph, rpm and other essential data, while other functions “float” on the sides. Simply drag in the icon and you have access to make adjustments as needed. Stern-thruster controls come via a toggle switch at the front of the throttle, while a second toggle by the thumb allows for redundant control of TAPS. It’s all simple and highly effective.

Luxury wakeboat buyers can compare the Ultré 23ZX to MasterCraft’s redesigned XStar 23, which has its own unique luxury and tech features, but comes at a higher price (starting at $395,000). What makes the Ultré 23ZX stand out among its other premium-class peers are not only the features that can’t be found on other boats, but also how much you wish other boats had them after using them. And if you’re worried a 23-foot boat isn’t enough for you, don’t fret. Tigé also offers the Ultré ZX in a 25-footer.

The SA mixes performance with impressive tow-sports capabilities. Garrett Cortese

Overview

The Supra SA is the official tow boat of the Pro Wakeboard Tour, the model of choice for Supra’s pro team riders, and an all-around performer known worldwide. For the 2025 model year, Supra added more comfort, more technology and more features, plus updated styling. Does all that mean it’s the boat for you?

At 22 feet, 5 inches, the SA is shorter than Supra’s SL and SE models, but it sits right in the sweet spot for combining high-level performance, comfort, and efficiency in the world of wakeboats. A smaller boat is easier to displace with ballast weight, and also easier for an engine to push it through the water. With smaller size comes better efficiency for towing and maneuvering in tight spots. Rated for 16 passengers, it possesses plenty of space for friends and family.

Interior and Accessories

One of the first things buyers might notice that’s different about the 2025 SA are the lounge-style seats built into the transom. Providing a great spot for relaxing, the backs hinge forward to reveal storage space that features hooks for hanging wet vests and towropes to drip dry. Under the seats? That’s where the Supra put a port-to-starboard surf locker, capable of holding multiple wakesurf boards—all accessible from the platform. Opt for the powered DropStep in your swim platform, and you’ll have an easy time getting out of the water and lounging in those transom seats. A new optional feature you might consider is the washdown system. With this optional washdown, you can rinse away a spill or just hose yourself off on a hot day.

Supra SA bow seating
Bow seating is secure and plush. Garrett Cortese

The comfortable seating throughout the SA features Supra’s Chill Tech Vinyl standard, which offers cooler fabric than other vinyls. Supra’s combination of cushioning and upholstery is a perfect mix, and the SA’s high gunwales provide support and security. Underneath each seat you’ll find more storage, and in the floor resides a dedicated spot for a cooler. The rear bench of the U-shaped seating flips over to become a rear-facing bench or a tabletop. Standard heated seats in both the captain’s chair and OB spots are nice touches, and both also can be optioned with an air-conditioning setting. The captain’s chair offers power adjustments in all four directions and all the support one needs for a long day’s driving—and we already mentioned the standard heating and optional cooling. Like the settings in a luxury car, you can save the seat’s positions as presets. In the bow, we discovered more quality seating.

Standard on all Supra models, the FXOne power tower quickly lowered and raised at the push of a button. If you want even more automated convenience in your tower, opt for the powered Bimini top. No more dealing with zippers, awkwardly tight boot covers, clamps or anything else—just push a button and watch your SA become a shaded haven in seconds.

Supra SA helm
The SA’s systems are operated via two large touchscreen displays. Garrett Cortese

You operate the SA’s systems via two large touchscreen displays—one centered above the steering wheel and the other to the right. Customize the top screen to show the info you want: navigation, vitals, cameras, etc. On the right screen, control all the SA’s systems, and everything is accessible with just a finger tap or two. Supra’s acclaimed AutoWake system takes a lot of the guesswork and variables out of the equation, which is great for families who are just getting into watersports. AutoWake’s onboard sensors detect pitch, roll, yaw and the overall running attitude of the boat, and then automatically adjust to keep the boat running at an optimal position based on the chosen activity (wakeboarding, wakesurfing port side or starboard, etc.).

Supra SA cockpit seating
The SA features Supra’s Chill Tech Vinyl standard, which offers cooler fabric than other vinyls. Garrett Cortese

Ballast

As the tow boat of the Pro Wakeboard Tour, the wake and wave of the SA are world-class. With 4,100 pounds of subfloor ballast and room for 16, the SA can displace a lot of water. Utilizing the Swell Surf System to shape the wakesurf waves, it treats riders to a clean surface with a big pocket that provides a lot of push. The center-mounted Supra Smartplate can make waves flatter and mellower, or steeper and more powerful. Again, it serves beginners and pros equally well.

The SA comes equipped with one of the coolest audio systems on the market: Dynamic Sound Design. This finely tuned array of components creates an immersive sound environment, and includes first-of-its-kind speakers mounted in the tower arms. Audio can also be controlled via a touchscreen mounted next to the glove box, so the captain doesn’t have to worry about changing tunes while focused on pulling a rider.

Supra SA wakesurfing
The Swell Surf System can shape amazing wakesurf waves. Garrett Cortese

For comparison, see MasterCraft’s X22 ($289,000 well-equipped, with a tandem trailer), which also features lounge-style transom seats and seating for 16, and quickly makes great wakes and waves for watersports fun. While a power tower and convertible rear seat aren’t standard, they can be added as options.

Combine the Supra SA’s performance, technology and features with a long standards list, and you get an all-around performer that’s tough to ignore, whether you’re shopping for your first boat or you are a seasoned pro. Pound for pound, the Supra SA proves a good bang for your buck in the ever-competitive watersports-boat market.

Overview

In 2024, Centurion introduced its Fe model as a way to get new customers into the Centurion lineup for a lower price, as well as to cater to legacy Centurion customers looking for a new model without fully upgrading. For 2025, Centurion has taken that approach a step further. The popular Fe line is now available in three sizes with a plethora of options. Introduced for 2025 is the Nv line, featuring the Nv213 and Nv233. The all-new Nv models have a bold new look, killer performance and a more palatable price for many.

Centurion Nv233 running
The Nv233 a sleek-looking boat, thanks to a lower profile and stance in the water compared to the Fe and Ri lines. Garrett Cortese

I was able to test the Nv233, which measures 23 feet, 3 inches and holds up to 14 people. At first glance, the Nv233 looks unique because it is so different from anything else in the Centurion lineup. The hullsides feature angular faceted designs, giving the Nv233 an aggressive yet clean look. It also sits lower in the water compared with its Fe siblings, adding to its sleek, aggressive stance. The large Centurion badging toward the transom further sets it apart as something different and new. Watersports enthusiasts with a keen eye might see some similarities to the now-retired Supreme ZS232 of years past (Centurion owns the Supreme brand), but the Nv233 is 100 percent new and 100 percent Centurion.

Engine and Ballast

Of course, being built in the Centurion family means the Nv is constructed around the acclaimed Opti-V hull design, which offers 21 degrees of deadrise at the transom. This deeper-V design not only provides for a more comfortable ride in choppier waters, but it also makes it easier to be displaced by the ballast, which in turn kicks up sizable wakes and waves for riding fun. When it comes to ballast, the Nv233 packs a punch, with the total available weight adding up to a whopping 5,000 pounds. More than half of this total can be filled in less than 90 seconds if you opt for the available RAMFILL2 system when ordering yours.

To shape that displaced water into a fun riding surface, the Nv233 can be equipped with another of Centurion’s acclaimed systems: QuickSurf Pro. These transom-mounted plates deploy at the push of a button and create solid wakesurfing waves that feature a clean, consistent face and a large pocket with plenty of push. The optional center-mounted Silent Stinger Wake Plate can be adjusted to change the size and shape of the wave—allowing riders of all skill levels and styles to enjoy riding behind the Nv233—but it also incorporates the boat’s exhaust, keeping it underwater to reduce overall engine noise. The Silent Stinger Wake Plate also adjusts the size and shape of the wakeboarding wake and the Nv233’s running attitude. With a couple of clicks of the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, the captain can quickly and easily make adjustments.

Centurion Nv233 helm
The Nv233 features a wide-screen touchscreen for easy systems control. Garrett Cortese

Interior and Accessories

The helm is clean and simple, avoiding the clutter found aboard a lot of other boats. A wide-screen touchscreen offers the captain easy, intuitive control of all the boat’s systems. The new user interface is simple. From ballast and surf setups to lighting, navigation and more, it’s all right at your fingertips. Another nice feature is the new Wet Sounds head unit, just to the left of the steering wheel, for quick control of the tunes. The windshield doesn’t wrap all the way around, but that has advantages for when a captain needs to quickly get behind the wheel without having to walk around the tower to board the boat.

Roswell’s tried-and-true Battle Advance tower is standard on the Nv233, and it not only looks great with the new lines of the boat, but also offers versatility with an oversize Bimini overhead for added shade and comfort. For interior amenities, Centurion doesn’t skimp just to keep the cost of the Nv233 down. The same Spradling vinyl with a 17 mm topcoat found in the top Ri265 model will be found here. Stitching is strong, cushioning is supportive, and you’ll never have to worry about stepping on upholstery. To help you avoid it, though, Centurion has added a step into the rear bench when accessing the transom. Beneath all the seats, storage is plentiful for all the requisite gear needed for a day on the lake. For added comfort on cooler days, the Nv233 can also be equipped with extendable heater vents. Despite its lower profile, the wraparound seating is well below the gunwales, offering comfortable and secure seats for all on board.

Centurion Nv233 cockpit
Roswell’s Battle Advance Tower looks great, offers versatility, and keeps a Bimini top overhead for shade. Garrett Cortese

To shop against the Nv233, buyers should take a look at the Moomba Mojo, another 23-footer that comes well-equipped at $123,910, and is known for its ease of use and solid performance. While the Mojo has less total ballast, it is rated to hold 17 passengers.

Whether you’re a buyer looking to move into the V-drive watersports market or you’re looking for high-end performance at a very approachable price, the Nv233 should be on your list. Centurion has done a terrific job of blending new stylings and creature comforts with the on-water performance for which it is known.

Pleasurecraft Marine’s New ZZ8R and ZZ8S Engines https://www.boatingmag.com/boats/pleasurecraft-marines-new-zz8r-and-zz8s-engines/ Mon, 27 May 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.boatingmag.com/?p=88419 High-performance marine engines often require higher-octane fuel, but PCM's new offerings are capable of running on Rec 90.

The post Pleasurecraft Marine’s New ZZ8R and ZZ8S Engines appeared first on Boating Mag.

It’s long been a given that a high-performing marine engine requires a higher-octane fuel in order to deliver its rated performance. The engines needed to power the largest of today’s watersports boats are a case in point.

Now, that’s changed. With the introduction of its ZZ8R and ZZ8S, Pleasurecraft Marine (PCM) offers two supercharged marine engines that can produce maximum power and torque without needing 93 or higher octane gasoline. In fact, the ZZ8S is the first supercharged inboard tow-sports engine over 600 hp to run on Rec 90.

This milestone is important for several reasons. For one, it allows boaters who require high-performing supercharged engines to choose the Rec 90 gasoline blend. Rec 90 is pricey, but it contains no ethanol, and so alleviates the problems associated with fuels such as E10. Also, the 93-octane fuel that most high-performance engines require for max output is not available at waterfront fuel docks in many markets. Boaters in those regions thus gain the convenience of using a readily available fuel grade if their boat is powered by these new PCM powerplants.

For the 2024 ZZ8S and ZZ8R models, PCM developed a new ground-up marinization system featuring a custom supercharger cooling circuit to provide the engine with lower intake air temperature and higher performance. Utilizing this marinization system along with custom calibration for engine optimization and protection, the mandate for using premium fuel in supercharged boat engines exists no longer, according to PCM.

Typically, higher-octane fuels have been required to prevent “knocking,” a phenomenon in which the fuel-air mixture ignites at the wrong time, sending destructive shock waves through the engine. “The engines have been calibrated to, and certified with, Rec 90-octane gasoline,” says Kevin Finney, PCM engineering manager. “Using fuel with a lower-octane rating isn’t recommended,” Finney advises, adding that, “additional performance may be gained with 93 octane.”

The ZZ8R is rated at 570 hp and 600 pound-feet of torque and features a new Super Duty transmission coupled with the PCM Power Plus V-drive in a 1.5-to-1 ratio, offering supercharged performance for midsize inboard watersports applications. For reference, this engine powers Nautique’s S and GS models (20 to 25 feet, respectively), according to PCM.

The ZZ8S “crushes the performance mold,” according to PCM. At 630 hp and 665 pound-feet of torque, it features the new Super Duty transmission and a new Super Duty V-drive in a ratio of 1.7-to-1 to power the industry’s largest wave- and wake-making machines. The ZZ8S can be found powering Nautique’s G Series Paragon and Centurion’s Fi245 and Fi265 models, according to a PCM spokesman.

Both the ZZ8R and ZZ8S are available as complete OEM powertrain packages. Neither is available for repower projects. That means performance and convenience might just be your incentive to shop for a new boat.

Boat Test: 2024 Supra SV https://www.boatingmag.com/boats/2024-supra-sv-boat-test/ Sat, 04 May 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.boatingmag.com/?p=88334 The Supra SV creates pro-level riding surfaces in a package that's easy to maneuver, trailer and fit in a garage.

Overview

The 21-foot-10-inch SV replaces Supra’s long-running, compact SR, and does it in a big way. A full foot longer, the SV feels, rides and performs more like its bigger sister, the SA (22 feet, 5 inches), renowned as the towboat of the Pro Wake Tour. And in terms of looks, the SV more resembles the biggest boat in the Supra line, the SE, thanks to its unique hullside patterns. Put together, the SV is beautiful both on and off the water, with an aggressive yet refined look. Plus, it’s loaded with standard features.

For instance, at its $190,000 starting price, the SV includes high-value items such as the Swell Surf System, AutoWake, power tower, Bimini top, clamping board racks, DSD audio, power captain’s chair, and more. Competitive boats, such as Malibu’s 22 LSV (starts at $163,000), offer systems such as Power Wedge and Surf Gate optionally. Of course, you can option-up the Supra SV as well, with a bigger engine, electronically assisted steering, flip-up transom seats, and more. I’ll get into that. But first, check out the Supra SV’s layout.

Supra SV bow seating
Family and friends enjoy plenty of seating room, even for adults up in the bow. Courtesy Supra Boats

Interior and Accessories

High gunwales and a fully wrapped windshield look great and make for a more comfortable ride. Deep seating keeps crew feeling secure, while also allowing for ample storage throughout the boat. Fit the SV with Supra’s Chill Tech vinyl, and that interior won’t get too hot, even on a sunny summer day. It’s a cliche, but Supra really did make the SV feel like a bigger boat. Family and friends enjoy plenty of seating room, even for adults up in the bow. Additionally, the seating can be customized. Supra’s convertible rear bench converts to a tabletop. In the bow, the Switchback seat acts as a windscreen and a seatback, cleverly converting via a sliding track, so it doesn’t need to be pulled out from under a seat. The SV also features pop-up backrests above the engine compartment for additional lounge-worthy luxury.

Despite being the smallest boat in Supra’s lineup, the SV’s calling card are the wakes and waves. Fill up the ballast, add a few friends, and the SV creates pro-level riding surfaces on par with boats that are 2 or even 3 feet longer. While testing the SV, I witnessed Supra team wakeboarder Fynn Bullock land an unbelievable 1080 (three full rotations) and team wakesurfer Beaux Wildman land every trick in his extensive bag. The wakes and waves are quickly and easily tuned to any rider’s skillset or preferences, thanks to Supra’s integrated Swell Surf tabs and SmartPlate, so beginners need not be intimidated and captains need not be frustrated.

Supra SV helm
There are two giant touchscreen displays—one mounted horizontally above the steering wheel and the second mounted vertically to the right. Courtesy Supra Boats

At the helm, you’re treated to two giant touchscreen displays—one mounted horizontally above the steering wheel and the second mounted vertically to the right. All the SV’s systems and functions are quickly accessed with a finger tap. The captain’s seat is a treat, with multiposition powered capabilities, memory functionality, and heating. What’s really cool is that it can be set up to automatically adjust the height based on the boat’s running angle. So, if you’re pulling a wakesurfer at slower speeds and the pitch is higher, the seat will automatically raise to give the captain a clearer view—no need to manually flip up a bolster. Bring the boat off plane, and the seat lowers automatically. Any driver who spends long days at the helm will appreciate the comfort and tech. I’d opt for the stern thruster.  Controlled via an integrated twist knob in the throttle, it makes the SV even easier to control at low speeds while docking.

For entertainment, the SV is outfitted with Supra’s latest audio system, DSD, which is an audio experience that has to be heard to be fully understood. DSD is unlike anything on the market—and not just because there are six speakers in the arms of the tower, but because the entire system is designed to work together. Equipped with 22 high-performance speakers, five amps and 25 channels of amplification, the DSD system is fine-tuned to create a truly immersive experience. Each section of speakers (bow, helm, cockpit, tower and subwoofer) can be individually controlled to customize volume throughout the boat. A third touchscreen at the dash behind the OB seat and a remote dial at the transom allow passengers to control the tunes anytime.

Supra SV interior
Deep seating keeps crew feeling secure, while also allowing for ample storage throughout the boat. Courtesy Supra Boats

What the SV might lack in size, it makes up for with other advantages. It’s easier to trailer and to fit in a garage or storage bay, and it consumes less fuel. Plus, it’s easier to maneuver around tighter marinas or docks. For buyers who don’t need room for 16 or more people—or are on a size-restricted body of water—but want the performance capabilities of a bigger boat, the SV provides an answer.

Supra SV board racks
Clamping board racks are just one of many high-value items. Courtesy Supra Boats

Kudos to the team at Supra for knocking it out of the park with the SV, taking many of the best attributes of other Supra models and making them work well in a smaller package. The SV is a must-see for buyers in the sub-22-foot market, and definitely a “don’t overlook this” for buyers who think they might need a 22- or 23-footer.

Overview

Centurion’s all-new Fe22 was designed and developed to be more affordable while still offering the wakesurfing and wakeboarding performance for which Centurion has become famous.

Centurion markets the Fe22 with a Surf Ready package that offers a lot of performance technologies and creature comforts, with an advertised price of $139,995. This consists of Centurion’s QuickSurf Pro system, Ramfill 2 ballast system (plus extra ballast, for a total of 4,350 pounds), a Roswell Battle Advance tower with board racks and Bimini top, and more. The Fe22’s angular style lines and signature badging give it a look that fits right in with its Centurion siblings. It also inherits the acclaimed Opti-V Hull—a deep-V-shaped design that creates added water displacement and a smoother, more comfortable ride in windblown chop.

Interior and Accessories

What makes the Fe22 unique as a price-point model in the Centurion line is that you don’t immediately see it or feel it upon stepping inside, and you definitely don’t notice it when it comes to the wakesurfing performance. While many other entry-level boats can feel like stripped-down versions of preexisting models or molds (and they often are), the Fe22 does not. Like other Centurion models, it features a comfortable, sturdy Spradling vinyl interior with plenty of padding both in the seats and bolsters. The only knock might be the lack of a reversible rear seat for better watching the action on the water. It’s common in many V-drives at all price points but is by no means a deal-breaker for the Fe22. Flooring throughout is GatorStep, and even the storage areas underneath the seats are Rhino-lined, giving this boat a nice, finished feel, even in the unseen areas. The 22-footer is rated for 13 passengers and has a listed dry weight of 5,100 pounds, so add in some friends and the 4,350 pounds of ballast, and you’re ready to create serious wakes and waves for riders of all levels.

The Fe22 wakeboarding
The Fe22 is capable of serving mellow waves for new riders or steeper, “lippier” ones preferred by advanced riders. Courtesy Centurion Boats

The QuickSurf Pro, Ramfill and ballast systems are all easily controlled from the large touchscreen at the helm. While other Centurion models feature dual side-by-side touchscreens, the Fe22 is limited to the single, but it doesn’t take away from any functionality or aesthetics. QuickSurf Pro features port and starboard plates mounted at the transom for surfing either side (and quickly being able to switch on the fly), while the center-mounted plate helps adjust the characteristics of the wakes and waves. The ability to fine-tune waves through ballast and plate adjustments means the Fe22 is capable of serving mellow waves for new riders or steeper, “lippier” ones preferred by advanced riders. At 22 feet, the Fe22 is easier to displace than its bigger Centurion siblings, and with all that ballast, it quickly kicks out pro-level wakes and waves.

The captain is treated to a swiveling Cobra Racing seat that is as comfortable as it is stylish. To the left of the steering wheel there is a stereo head unit and a wireless phone-charger cradle. Behind the steering wheel are dual paddle-shifter controls, which control the center wake plate and the speed control for on-the-fly adjustments. An all-new windshield designed to flow with the lines of the Fe22 wraps the cockpit in style. In the floor of the walk-through is a convenient built-in cooler, and above is a hatch to a trash bin integrated into the storage behind the OB seat. The Roswell tower integrates seamlessly with the boat, and comes in white or black colorways, with side panels that can be upgraded to a custom color of your choosing. With the Surf Ready package, the tower is equipped with two WetSounds speakers, which complement the seven additional speakers (including a subwoofer) throughout the interior.

Engine

For power, a 6L 409 hp PCM Crusader comes standard, and provides plenty of giddy-up to get on plane, especially when the QuickLaunch system is engaged, which utilizes the surf plates to assist with planing while making bow rise almost nonexistent. Accessing the swim platform is both easy and convenient, thanks to a transom walk-through and a step pad built into the rear bench. This keeps foot traffic off the upholstery—always a plus. At the transom, a large rear locker conveniently stows several boards and all the requisite gear, but it also is upgradable to hold additional ballast.

In terms of shopping, buyers will want to look at the Moomba Craz ($116,300 well-equipped), a fellow 22-footer with a lot of similar specs and options, including 4,500 pounds of ballast and a 70-gallon tank. The Craz also offers a passenger rating of 16.

As buyers in the watersports market have become inundated with bigger boats with price tags to match, it’s refreshing for Centurion to create the Fe22 with the sole purpose of making it more affordable relative to the market while still delivering great performance. This model not only does that, but top to bottom, it also is a good-looking, well-built, comfortable and really fun boat. For buyers who don’t need every bell and whistle, or who don’t need anything more than 22 feet, the Fe22 should make the shortlist.

High Points

  • Comfort—the Fe22 feels much bigger than other similarly sized boats, plus the interior materials are top-notch.
  • Ease of use—the onboard systems make getting out and riding a breeze.
  • As part of the Surf Ready package, the Champ sound system, with its nine speakers, sounds great everywhere in the boat.

Overview

The XT line of boats from MasterCraft is one of the builder’s most popular, largely because of the many customization choices. Now MasterCraft brings back the biggest: the 25-foot XT25. Boasting room for 18, a robust 92-gallon fuel tank, and the comfort and performance for which MasterCraft is acclaimed, the XT25 is a must-see for buyers seeking a big V-drive watersports boat.

The XT25 offers comfort for all. Tom King

As mentioned, the XT line can be tweaked and adjusted to accommodate a variety of budgets and preferences. Add on nearly every option, and an XT25 comes close to the specs found in the higher-level X series. Conversely, keep the options trimmed back, and buyers can still get signature MasterCraft styling and performance while keeping the overall cost of acquisition lower. One of the biggest of those options, physically and visually, is the tower. MasterCraft offers three: the Z6, Z8 and Z10.

The Z6—standard on all models—comes with clamping board racks and now also offers the option to upgrade to power board racks.

The Z8 tower—an upgrade on XStar S, X and XT models—comes with options for black or silver tower legs; black, titanium or silver tubes; and silver or black clamping board racks. It also features patent-pending Hydro-Lock technology, making it one of the easiest manual towers to operate that we’ve tested.

Our test model featured the powered Z10 tower, which quickly and easily lowered at the push of a button. Clamping board racks are standard, and the oversize Bimini shade features wakesurf- and foil-board storage both above and below. Customize the Z8 and Z10 with colored inlays to add a unique look to your boat

Interior and Accessories

Of course, the calling card of the XT25 is its size. With 3,200 pounds of ballast and room for 18 family and friends, the XT25 stands large and ready for you and your whole crew to have loads of fun on the water. MasterCraft’s SurfStar system, along with its included factory presets—which now include settings for beginner and advanced wake-foil riding—can have you up and riding in no time. The built-in Rapid Surf software allows for quick, intuitive adjustments to the wakesurf waves, where riders can choose from seven different settings between mellow and steep. An intuitive diagram of a wave on the display at the helm makes it even easier to understand how changes you make to the settings will affect the characteristics of the wave. It’s easy to transition from a brand-new rider to a pro, all with a couple of finger taps on the display. Riders will be stoked to find a large, clean wave that offers a great transition and tons of push; once a perfect wave is dialed in, the rider can save all the settings to their own custom preset.

All the space aboard the XT25 leaves plenty of room for passengers and gear. Storage is ample throughout, including some cool, new webbed baskets that hang in the bays on each side of the engine—great for letting wet ropes and life jackets drip down and not get in the boat. MasterCraft’s upholstery is tops for comfort, with plush padding and solid stitching. The convertible rear bench is one of the easiest to operate in the segment—simply pull up from the top with an integrated handle and allow the bench to flip into place. The attention to detail continues with the scalloped seatbacks at the rear of the wraparound area, which add comfort and a high-end look. Opt for the CoolFeel interior, and upholstery temperatures stay lower, even on hot summer days, thanks to the high-tech vinyl used in the upholstery. In the lounge area, cellphone-holder trays are purposely placed above the inset cup holders to keep them out of the sun—and the trays can be optioned with wireless-charging capabilities. At the transom, comfy seat pads above the swim platform are standard, and flip-up backrests can be added to make it a great lounge area. The swim platform itself can also be optioned with a flip-down step, to make for much easier boarding.

MasterCraft XT25 board rack
Board access from the tower is easy. Tom King

Every system on board the XT25 is quickly and easily controlled from the helm, whether you opt for the dual-screen setup—featuring an 11-inch touchscreen to the captain’s right and a 12-inch display above the steering wheel—or go with the standard 7-inch touchscreen. One nice touch from MasterCraft is that even with the large touchscreen, there are still soft-touch analog switches to the side for added convenience and redundancy if ever needed.

Shop the XT25 against the Malibu 25 LSV ($207,232 starting MSRP), which has a much different look than the lines of the MasterCraft, but is a fellow 25-footer with room for 18 and lots of options.

Overall, the return of the XT25 to the MasterCraft line is a great option for buyers who like the look of a traditional bow, want as much room and comfort as possible, and prefer customizing their boat through a variety of optional upgrades. Of course, the killer endless waves and fun times on the water come standard.

  • Optional dual-screen display makes navigating the XT25’s functions a breeze.
  • Klipsch audio throughout, along with four speakers on the tower, provide killer audio experience.

Axis A245 running
The A245 delivers world-class wakes and waves. Tom King

Overview

An all-new boat for 2024, the Axis A245’s running surface is still designated as a “Wake-Plus” hull. But it is designed specifically to work with the updated ballast placement, and even more with the Power Wedge III and Surf Gate systems. Push a few buttons, and the A245 pumps out world-class wakes and waves. The combination of the Power Wedge and Surf Gate has long made the setting up of an Axis (and adjusting it on the fly) one of the easiest on the market. The Power Wedge not only acts as an extra 1,500 pounds of ballast by pulling the back of the A245 deeper into the water, but it also customizes the shape of the wakes and waves. With six positions from which to choose, it’s easy to dial in rider preferences. At position one, the wave is longer and mellower, and as the Power Wedge moves toward position six, the wave gradually gets steeper and more powerful. For extra control, riders can wear the Surf Band remote. That lets them adjust the Power Wedge, boatspeed, Surf Gate side (making transfers even easier to time) and tower speaker volume, all while riding.

Axis A245 helm

Interior and Accessories

Rated for a crew of 18, the A245 is spacious, with enough storage and amenities to suit everyone on board. Truly, the depth of the storage areas under the lounge seating has to be seen (or stood in) to be believed. Seating can be customized with a sliding rear bench, as well as pop-up backrests on both sides of the wraparound lounge. The bow retains Axis’ signature, wide, pickle-fork look, which means plenty of space and storage. The A245’s higher gunwales and updated sheerline also make it more comfortable throughout.

Overhead, the AW20 tower offers board storage built into the oversize Bimini top. Multiple board racks can be added to either side. The AW20 is easily lowered by a single person thanks to integrated gas shocks, even with boards in the racks and the four optional Wet Sounds Rev10 mounted to it.

The A245 can be equipped with a premium sport dash that includes wireless phone charging, a 7-inch touchscreen, a remote stereo, and a soft-touch keypad that allows for quick, easy control of major systems such as ballast, Surf Gate, Power Wedge, and lighting. The touchscreen also offers control of all these systems.

Overview

Let’s get this out of the way now: The Predator Power Tower is not only ingenious, but it makes the 2024 Centurion Ri265 more versatile and comfortable in a multitude of ways. Utilizing a scissor-hinge design and four Linak electric linear actuators (rated at 2,400 pounds each), the PPT folds down while keeping the 9-foot Bimini top perfectly flat. Want more shade or need protection from a sudden rain shower? The PPT can lower in less than 20 seconds. Even at its lowest position, there is still plenty of headroom for the captain to drive and passengers to sit underneath comfortably. Plus, the Ri265 can operate at any speed with the tower in any position—fully raised, lowered, or at any point in between. It can also tow while in any position. So, if you’ve got a wakesurfer who wants to ride and passengers who want more shade, no problem. And back to that Bimini; at 9 feet long, it offers plenty of coverage. Add in the optional extension and you can cover the whole lounge. What’s really unique is that the entire exoskeleton structure is rigid and sturdy, so it’s always in the deployed position, which means no more folding and unfolding your Bimini structure. The PPT’s Bimini is designed to be driven and towed while deployed. If you’re a fan of a little extra sun, though, the Bimini top has convertible forward sections. Simply unzip the port and starboard sides, and the section rolls back on itself thanks to functionality similar to what you might find in a child’s slap bracelet. With all of its design, functionality and versatility, it’s easy to see why the Roswell-designed PPT is the most revolutionary tower brought to the tow-boat market.

When it comes to performance, the Ri265 comes up big as well. With 5,850 pounds of available ballast, combined with Centurion’s QuickSurf system and the acclaimed Opti-V hull, the Ri265 is designed to create optimal wakesurfing waves. The ballast system is split into seven zones, allowing riders to customize the wave’s shape and size. Further customization comes via the QuickSurf plates on the transom, as well as the center-mounted Stinger Wake Plate. Adjusting the Stinger Wake Plate will make the wave longer and mellower or shorter and steeper. The QuickSurf plates can also be tweaked for even more wave optimization. Should you find a combination of ballast, plate positions and speed that really hits the mark, you can save it as a rider profile for use at any time in the future.

Interior and Accessories

You control the boat’s systems via dual 12-inch Revo Side-by-Side touchscreens at the helm. Quickly move through menus with the tap of a finger to control everything from ballast systems and speed control to interior lighting options and GPS mapping. Make on-the-fly adjustments to the Ri265’s speed and Stinger Wake Plate using paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. We truly appreciated the integrated fuel-monitoring data. For a boat with a 92-gallon fuel tank that owners will likely utilize on larger bodies of water, access to fuel-consumption rates and estimated range is vital. Integrated cameras in the bow and stern provide views of what’s going on in the water; the bow camera is especially useful for putting the big Ri265 on the trailer.

Of course, the Ri265 offers much more than a cool tower and world-class wakes and waves. With its Yacht Certified rating, the Ri265 can hold all your friends and family, along with all the gear you need for a day on the water. Storage is abundant behind and under almost every seat, as well as in a giant in-floor locker that can also act as a cooler. With deep gunwales, supple padding and Spradling vinyl interior, the Ri265 is comfortable from bow to stern for all passengers. Seating is customizable via the convertible rear bench sliding into the cockpit, as well as pop-up backrests on the port and starboard sides of the wraparound seating. The model we tested was equipped with Centurion’s Warrior Package, which offers upgrades to the audio system, soft-touch flooring designs, and a cool topography-inspired stitching pattern throughout. This look sets the Ri265 apart from anything else on the water. The lounge factor goes up at the transom as well, with pop-up backrests integrated into the engine compartment and storage-bay hatches.

Centurion Ri265 wakesurfing
Wakes and waves are powerful, beautiful, and easily adjusted. Garrett Cortese

For 2024, the Ri265 isn’t just one of the largest tow boats in the ever-expanding watersports market; it’s one of the most well-thought-out and versatile, even with its extra-large size. Shoppers might consider the Malibu Wakesetter 26 LSV (price not available at press time) when shopping. Families looking to accommodate everybody and do it all in style and comfort while enjoying killer wakesurfing action and an unbelievably cool tower will find the Ri265 a safe bet.

  • All-new windshield not only stylishly complements the lines of the boat, but also features integrated vents for additional airflow.

Low Points

  • Unlike most of its competitors, the Ri265’s convertible rear bench does not have integrated backrests; they insert manually, which is an added step.
